Last Call for Jersey Peach: Catch It Before It's Gone

Every summer follows the same script: Jersey Peach arrives, everyone rejoices, and then one day in late August it's simply gone from the board. If you haven't had your scoop yet this year, consider this your friendly last call.

Why it can't stay

Jersey Peach is tied to the Garden State's real peach harvest, and when the harvest winds down, so does the flavor. That's not a flaw; it's the whole point. A flavor built on ripe local peaches only exists while ripe local peaches do, and that's what makes the first scoop of summer special and the last one a little bittersweet.

How to catch it before it goes

Seasonal flavors leave the rotating board without much ceremony, and availability can vary by shop. If you're making a special trip, it never hurts to call ahead: Tinton Falls at (732) 842-5874 or Oakhurst at (732) 517-0000. And if Jersey Peach is in the case when you walk in, order it then and there. "I'll get it next time" is how people end up waiting until next summer.

The quart trick: freeze the season

Here's the move the regulars swear by: enjoy your scoop at the shop, then have the counter hand-pack a quart to take home. Wrapped tight and tucked in the back of the freezer, that quart becomes a time capsule. Pulling out Jersey Peach on a gray October evening is one of life's great small victories.

Don't overthink it: One scoop for now, one hand-packed quart for later. That's the whole strategy, and nobody has ever regretted it.

The full peach story

Want to know why this flavor earns all the fuss? Our Jersey Peach season post covers what makes Garden State peaches worth building an ice cream around. And when the peaches do take their bow, the seasonal case rolls right on to the next act. But that's a story for another post: this week belongs to the peach.
